Spencer

Virginia (Deda) Myrtle Behrens, daughter of Ebb and Eva (Brown) Brinkley was born April 24, 1924, in Clay County, Iowa, where her childhood years were spent.  She graduated from Spencer High School on May 19, 1941.  She was baptized in 1942, and confirmed at First English Lutheran Church on March 30, 1947, in Spencer, Iowa.

Virginia married Milo (Mike) Koenck in Royal, Iowa, on October 14, 1945.  To this union two daughters were born.  Milo passed away in 1964.

On November 27, 1970, Virginia and Ervin Behrens were married at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, and farmed north of Everly until retirement.  Ervin passed away in 2010.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ervin and Mike; seven brothers:  George, Wes, Verne, Dale, Kenneth, Roy and Donald; six sisters:  Lela Swanson, Helen Hoffman, Loretta Iverson, Ruby Fitzloff, Margaret Johanson and Mary Schoning.

Virginia is survived by daughters:  Karla (David) Clegg of Vancouver, WA, and Cindy Koenck of Longmont, CO; stepchildren:  Leo (Kathy) Behrens of Everly, IA, Dorothy Brinkley (Gary) of Hampton, IA, Donna Hazelton of Owatonna, MN, Mary Luchtel of Byron, MN, and Paul (Kris) Behrens of Spencer, IA; 11 grandchildren; 13-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Virginia enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing cards and games (especially Scrabble) and family gatherings.  She was a great cook and will long be remembered by her family for those great chocolate brownies and her famous macaroni and cheese.  If you hadn’t studied Scrabble dictionary, it was hard to compete against her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church at 1525 Three Cross RD, Milford, IA 51351 to help build their new drive-in worship complex.
