Verla Ruby Klaessy

     Verla Ruby Ayres Klaessy, was born to Verla Mildred (Brewer) and Ralph Ayres on March 9, 1929, near Gillett Grove, IA. She grew up on a farm near Spencer and went to Harmony country school. She attended high school in Greenville and Spencer, graduating in 1946. She then went on to William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

     She married Earl Klaessy on August 8, 1948 at the First Baptist Church in Spencer. After 65 years of marriage, Earl went to his eternal home on January 4, 2014. They were blessed with two children: Kim Marie and James Earl. They enjoyed traveling, camping, mountain climbing, visiting all 50 states, Canada, Europe and Israel.

     She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at Clay County National Bank and Cornwall and Cornwall. She spent her later years with the Spencer School in the Lincoln School Library. Verla was active in first Baptist Church for many years as an organist and various opportunities. She was the local director of Child Evangelism Fellowship classes for several years. As an author, she was published in several books and magazines. She enjoyed art, especially watercolor.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters in infancy, Velma Marie and Carol Jean and her husband, Earl.

     Verla is survived by her daughter, Kim (DuWayne) Oden; her son, James; her grandchildren: Craig Oden, Eric Oden and Emily Oden and Craig’s children: Craig Michael, Blake and Brooklyn.
