Shirley Mae Johnstone

Shirley Mae Johnstone, the daughter of  Alfred N. and Leona M. (Mason) Jensen, was born February 17, 1925 in Britt, IA.  Her childhood years were spent in Lake Park, IA, where she received her education graduating from Lake Park High School.  She later continued her education at a College of Business in Minneapolis, MN.

     Shirley married Robert Johnstone on May 29, 1949 in Lake Park, IA.  Following their marriage, they lived in Minneapolis, MN and Pelican Rapids, MN, until moving to Spencer, IA, where Shirley and Bob owned and operated Hobbi-Crafts in Spencer for 12 years, until retiring in 1981.  She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer where she was active in the Women’s Fellowship Group.  Shirley was known as the “Queen of the Pot Holders” for her expertise in making them.  She was also active with her children, serving as a Girl Scout Leader when Janice was a little girl.

     She passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, IA on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the age of 96.  Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; a son, Tom Johnstone and a son-in-law, Bradley Howe.

     Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Janice and her husband, Ronald Cuperus of Walker, MN; two sons: Fred (Nina) Johnstone of Fredericksburg, VA and Andrew Johnstone of Sioux Falls, SD; a grandson, Erick (Julie) Youde of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Katie (Jeff) Bohnenkamp of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

SERVICES
Private Family Services will be held on Friday, August 6, 2021 at Warner Chapel in Spencer.
