Shirley Anne Pruss

October 16, 1928 — October 26, 2022

Spencer

Shirley Anne (Thompson) Pruss was born in Creighton, NE on October 16, 1928.  She was the 10th and youngest child of George and Mary Mabel (Boyle) Thompson.  She received her early education at a rural school near Creighton and graduated from St. Ludger’s Academy in 1946.

On November 25, 1946, she was married to Joseph B. Pruss and they became the parents of three sons and six daughters.

For more than forty years Shirley and Joe owned Pruss Construction Company in Nebraska and Iowa.  In the 1980’s they managed apartment complexes in southern California before retiring and returning to Iowa.

Shirley enjoyed a game of cards with family and friends, relaxing with a crossword puzzle, singing, and following her beloved Chicago Cubs.

Shirley passed away peacefully at St. Luke Lutheran Home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at the age of 94 years and 10 days.

Grateful for having shared her life are her eight surviving children: Rita (Jim) Mathine of Grapevine, TX, Theresa (Paul) Kauten of Kaiser, MO, Joe (Mary) Pruss of Estherville, IA, Colleen Tanner of Auburn, WA, Karen (Joel) Naber of Milford, IA, Tim (Colleen) Pruss of Granite Falls, WA, Jeff (Virginia) Pruss of Spirit Lake, IA and Amy (Andre) Braceros of Yucaipa, CA; 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Mary Ellen Durham; grandsons, Tony Pruss and David Hagen; son-in-law, Peter Durham; daughter-in-law, Linda Pruss.

The family would like to express our appreciation and gratitude for the excellent care Shirley received from the staff at both Riverview and St Luke’s.  They were like family and an important part of her life over the last 4 years, especially during the Covid pandemic, and for that we are forever grateful.
