Ruth Elizabeth Tewes, the daughter of John and Amalie (Schaefer) Galm, was born May 4, 1929 in Moneta, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Moneta, Iowa, where she attended Moneta Schools until the 9th grade, when she finished her schooling at St. Mary’s Academy in Alton, Iowa.
Ruth married Delmar Dale Tewes on April 28, 1948 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal, Iowa. After their marriage, she was a devoted farm wife and mother to her 10 children on a farm near Royal. After the children were grown, she received a nurses aide course certificate through Hartley Nursing Home and worked there for a year. Ruth was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal for many years serving with the Altar Society, where she was president and was a member of several committee’s and groups. She loved gardening, was a good cook, enjoyed baking bread and pies, picked a lot of chickens, shucked a lot of corn alongside the kids and just loved life on the farm and spending time with her family. In the words of her brother John, “to hear Ruth laugh, was to have your day made.”
She passed away at the Ruthven Care Center on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at the age of 93. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar; two daughters: Mary Schuknecht and Linda Hersom; two grandsons: Patrick Barnes & Tyler Tewes; a great grandson, Noah Kiley, four brothers: Paul, Herman, John and Edwin “Eddy” Galm, and one sister, Sister Margaret Galm.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Janice Barnes, Paula Tewes, Mark (Deb) Tewes, Tom (Shelly) Tewes, John (Laurie) Tewes, Matt (Joanne) Tewes, Michelle Wilson & Pat (Jenny) Tewes; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Galm; other relatives and friends.
