Ruth Ann Ficken the daughter of Oliver and Lois (Calkins) was born May 15th, 1941 in Spencer, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Everly IA where she attended Everly Community Schools. She graduated in 1958.

     Ruth married Norman Ray Fick February 1, 1959. Following their marriage, they made their home in Spencer, IA. During her time in Spencer she worked at various restaurants including Thurston’s Steak House and managed the Fireside Lounge. In those years she made many dear life long friendships and had many good times with her follow team members.

     Ruth’s main focus was always her family. For all the years she was raising her boys she and Norm would spend many weekends at Lake Okoboji camping, boating and relaxing with friends. Her son Kevin was a competitive motor cross racer and she and Norm traveled many places in support of his racing career. Her holiday feast where amazing and she could feed an entire army with the meal prepared. She really enjoyed hosting her extended family for all holidays. After her retirement she made many enjoyable trips to California to spend time with her son Kevin, his wife Marcia and their 3 children Justin, Christian and Brianna. She also traveled to Minneapolis to celebrate holidays at her son Brad’s home. In addition, she made annual trips to Puerto Vallarta Mexico with him to enjoy many good times with her family and friends at the home there. She loved her time at her Spencer home with her friends and beloved pets. Ruth was loving and kind to any and all animals she came across.

     Ruth passed away in the hospital October 11th in hospice. She was cared for by her family and very talented and caring nursing staff at the Spencer Hospital. Prior to her hospitalization Ruth was given home care and friendship from Shelly Lorenzen for the past 3 years. Shelly provided Ruth with compassionate, fun loving care.

     Ruth passed away at the age of 79. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norm, her son Bruce, and her sister Mary Rieck. She is survived by her children: Brad and his partner Leo, Kevin and wife Marcia and their 3 children Justin, Christian, and Brianna, Kent Ficken and his wife Vicki their daughter Mary, her sister Lori Sorenson and husband Jay and their 3 children Nina, Nick and Nate.

SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
