Ronald Lee Ries

Jul 20, 1950 — Aug 15, 2026

Ronald Lee Ries, 76, of Spencer, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, at St. Luke Lutheran Home, following a cancer diagnosis in November 2025.

Ron was born July 20, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Leonard and Elizabeth Ries (Hill). He grew up in Iowa and, following graduation, began a career in the printing industry, where he specialized in making printing plates. In the late 1980s, Ron made the courageous decision to move his family to Spencer, Iowa, to pursue a new opportunity. He continued his career in printing, working faithfully until his retirement when RR Donnelley closed its Spencer operations.

While Ron valued his work, his greatest accomplishment and source of pride was his family. Nothing brought him more joy than being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether attending sporting events, sharing an adventure, offering a helping hand, or simply being present, Ron made family his highest priority.

His children and grandchildren knew they could always count on him. He eagerly volunteered to babysit whenever asked and treasured the countless hours he spent making memories with the younger generations. From family outings to everyday moments, Ron's love was constant, steadfast, and unconditional.

Left to cherish his memory are his five children: Chad (Amy) Ries of Spencer, Iowa; Ryan (April) Ries of Spencer, Iowa; Lori (Brian) Vanderpool of Gillett Grove, Iowa; Jake (Erin) Ries of Spencer, Iowa; and Beth Ries (Chuck Griffin) of Spencer, Iowa.

He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and his sister, Linda Mell of Spencer, Iowa.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Elizabeth Ries, and his brothers, Martin Ries and Richard Ries.

Ron will be remembered for his devotion to family, his willingness to help others, his quiet strength, and the love he shared with those around him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family who brought him so much pride and happiness.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

"The measure of a life is not in the years lived, but in the love shared. Ron's love for his family will continue for generations."
