His childhood years were spent on a farm Near Climbing Hill, IA, where he received his education, graduating from Climbing Hill High School. After graduation, he moved to Sioux City, IA where he worked for Tower Communications welding propane tanks. When Tower closed he was a Route Salesman for Omar Bread Company.
Roger married Sharon "Sherrie" Wilcox on April 20, 1963 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church from 1965 to 2018 at which time Roger and Sherrie transferred their membership to Bethany Lutheran Church, but never forgot their Trinity family.
