Philip Joseph Rath, age 93, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, while residing at Spencer Post Acute Rehabilitation Center in Spencer, Iowa.
Philip was born on June 10, 1932, in Portsmouth, Iowa, to Anthony and Suzanna Rath. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, from November 1952 to 1954.
On December 26, 1955, Philip married Shirley Jean Whitaker. Together, they raised two daughters, Kimberly Puffer and Kellene Sassman. Phil and Shirley shared many loving years until Shirley’s passing and built a life rooted in hard work, family, and quiet enjoyment. One of their greatest accomplishments was building their dream home, “The Ridge,” along the Little Sioux River, a place that remained especially dear to Phil’s heart.
Philip dedicated 36 years of his professional life to Corn Belt Power, where he served as Plant Managerbefore retiring in 1996. He was respected for his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment.
In his free time, Phil enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting, and trapping. Above all, his greatest joy came from being surrounded by his family, friends, and those he loved.
Philip is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Puffer (James) and Kellene Sassman (Doug); his grandchildren, Aaron Sassman (Stacy), Ryan Sassman, Dawn Sassman (Adam), Jenny Cyr (Kyle), and Sean Puffer (Elspeth); and his great‑grandchildren, Tate Axdahl, Keely Spooner, Lexi Sassman, AJ Sassman, Wyatt Sassman, Sarah Cyr, Teddy Puffer, and Sammy Puffer. He is also survived by his brother, Elmer Rath (Donna); sister, Lucille Fitzsenry; and brother‑ and sister‑in‑law, Don and Ardy Whitaker along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Rath; his parents, Anthony and Suzanna Rath; his brothers, Bernard, Raymond, Melvin, Michael, Walter, and Robert Rath; and his parents‑in‑law, Curtis and Clara Whitaker.
Philip will be remembered for his devotion to family, his quiet strength, and the home and memories he built along the Little Sioux River. His legacy lives on through the many generations who were blessed to know and love him.
