Nathan Paul was born on June 2, 1989 in Spencer, IA. He and his mother, Tonya spent his early years living in Storm Lake, later relocating to Sioux Rapids, IA. Sioux Rapids became home to Nate, where many lifelong friendships were built, and where Nate was lovingly adopted by Michael Cowell following marriage to his mother. Nate graduated from Sioux Central High School in 2008. After high school, he followed in his dad’s footsteps and enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. He served for 4 years, earning the rank of Sergeant. Nate was proud of his time in the Marines and maintained many close friendships with his brothers that he served alongside.
In July of 2017, Nate met his soul mate, Amber Bendlin. He and his daughter Hadley welcomed her into their home and lives where they began building a beautiful story and adding to their family. On July 17, 2021, Nate married Amber, in Milford, IA. WIthin their 8 years together, they filled their home with love, chaos, laughter, and 5 beautiful children. Hadley Elizabeth, Rayne Grace, Aria Mae, Alex Michael, and Rylan Nathan. His wife and children were his greatest joys and he was dedicated to sharing his love and interests with them.
There wasn’t a challenge that Nate wasn’t up to facing, he loved learning new things and put passion and dedication into all he did. Nate worked as a Plant Technician and other roles at POET for several years. Over the past year, he worked as an Industrial Plumber with Midwestern Mechanical, recently completing the 1st-year apprenticeship in which he was proud to accomplish. Nate had a love for riding his motorcycle, attending rock concerts, watching Las Vegas Raider football, working on cars with his dad, playing video games with friends, fishing, kayaking, grilling, and outdoor activities. Most of all, Nate enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
On Wednesday, June 11, Nate passed away at the age of 36. He is preceded in death by his brother: Mason Naeve; his grandparents: Norman and Gayla Lindsey, and Donald Cowell; his father-in-law: Shane Bendlin; and his dear friend: Alex Leewright.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Amber Cowell; his children: Hadley, Rayne, Aria, Alex, and Rylan; his parents: Tonya (Clint) Mercy and Michael (Judy) Cowell; his siblings: Jennifer, Kristen, Brielle, Erin, Tristan, Marcus, Carter, and Chandy; his grandma: Patricia Cowell; his mother and father-in law, Amy and Lance Tungland, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, and several cherished friends.
Nate will be remembered for his genuine smile, goofy personality, quirky sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family. He will be missed beyond measure and the end of his life will not be the end of his legacy and the impact his life had.
Memorials may be given to the family in Nathan's name.
