Merrill “Ossie” Duane Schoer, the son of Harry and Esther (Santage) Schoer was born January 30, 1934, in Peterson, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Rossie and Royal, Iowa, area where he attended school and graduated from Royal High School in 1952. Merrill enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and served until his Honorable Discharge in 1957.
Merrill married Shirley Boyle on April 8, 1955, in Tacoma, Washington. They lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where he worked at an auto body shop. They moved to Spencer, Iowa, in 1967 and started his own auto body shop and continued to grow it.
Merrill enjoyed working on cars, horses, John Deere tractors, model trains, 4th of July reunions, practicing guitar, listening to talk radio, and staying busy. He was always proud of his service in the Air Force and building his own house. He was a member of Hope Reformed Church in Spencer, Iowa, and Susquehanna Baptist Church in Independence, Missouri.
Merrill passed away in Independence, Missouri on July 21, 2020, at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Shirley; and daughter, Tami Pullen.
Left to cherish his memory are his three daughters: Valerie (Dan) Utley of Blue Springs, MO, Sidra (Dave) Root of Webster City, IA, and Jayne (John) Smith of Independence, MO; son-in-law, Bill Pullen of Spencer, IA; eight grandchildren: Jeremy, Amber, Jeni, Jolynn, Abi, Laura, Austyn, and Lucca; 11 great-grandchildren: Kira, Noah, Haedden, Stacia, Thomas, Ashlynn, Phoenix, Landon, Carson, Quinn, and Wess; one sister, Marcia (Roger) Stephas of Ruthven, IA; two brothers-in-law, Leo Stephas and Keith (Linda) Stephas; nieces, nephews, other relatives; and many friends.
