Maureen Kadous, aged 84, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025 in San Antonio, TX.
She was born November 27, 1940, in Emmetsburg, IA to James and Nora (Nolan) Brennan, the 2nd of 6 children.
After graduating high school in 1958, Maureen attended Emmetsburg Junior College before moving on to the University of Iowa, where she obtained her teaching certificate. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at Buena Vista University.
Her long career in elementary education started in Hartley, IA. From there, she moved on to Sacred Heart School in Spencer, IA. Maureen loved teaching math for grades 6 - 8, as well as serving as the 6th grade home room teacher. She was eventually appointed school principal (while still teaching her math classes), a post she held until her retirement from teaching. While serving as principal, she still found time to complete her Masters of Education degree from Drake University. Many of her fondest memories involved her former students and fellow teachers. She loved seeing her former pupils thrive.
Maureen married Don Kadous on April 27, 1963, a union that remained strong for the remainder of her life. They had 3 children: Kathryn, John, and Dan. She loved spending time with (and spoiling) her 5 grandchildren. Maureen and Don celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2013, surrounded by extended family and countless friends. Incredibly, they reached their 62nd anniversary 9 weeks before her passing. A devout Catholic, she remained an active member of Spencer Sacred Heart Church up until 2024, when she moved to San Antonio, TX.
Aside from her family, her great loves were the Iowa Hawkeyes and anything Irish. She was thrilled to have been able to travel to Ireland twice, as well as visiting England, and making a memorable trip to France. Maureen loved music, often singing along to the car radio. She also enjoyed her daily coffee with neighbors and friends, and her Zumba classes at the Y. Maureen enjoyed long walks outside. She will be remembered for her kindness and empathy. She was never too fond of cooking, but she made a mean Snicker Salad!
Maureen was preceded in death by her parents James and Nora Brennan, and her brother Jim. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Don and their 3 children; daughter Kathryn (Dan) of Avondale Estates, GA and sons John (Lisa) of San Antonio, TX and Dan (Kelly) of Suwanee, GA, her sisters Mary Parsons, Janette (Dick) Jorgenson, Nora (Jerry) Hedges, brother Tom (Helen) Brennan, sister-in-law Maureen Brennan and 5 grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
