Marlene Jane Frey

May 25, 1933 — October 12, 2022

Norwalk

Marlene Jane Frey, the daughter of Raymond and Marie (Trei) Monkemeier, was born on May 25th, 1933 in George, Iowa.

She spent her early years on different family farms until graduating from Melvin High School in 1951. On August 22, 1952, Marlene married Franklyn Frey in Ashton, Iowa. They began their married life in Sibley and eventually moved to Spencer in 1957, where they made their family home.

Marlene was a life-long homemaker, dedicated to her family in every regard. She was involved in many church organizations and active in music groups including church choir, the Hope Trio, and the local chapter of Sweet Adelines. Marlene volunteered in her children’s schools and with civic groups, modeling for her children and instilling in future generations the importance of giving back to their community.

Remaining in the family home until 2017, Marlene then moved to Riverview Terrace Assisted Living, and more recently was a resident of The Gardens, a memory care unit at Edencrest Assisted Living in Norwalk, Iowa.

Marlene was well-known for cooking and baking delicious dishes for family and friends. In addition, she loved to add to her extensive bear collection and, along with Franklyn, truly enjoyed camping and building lasting memories with their grandchildren. The value and importance of both family and tradition was always apparent in Frank and Marlene’s life together, as was their strong faith and dedication to insuring their children knew that they were loved.

Marlene was preceded in death by her loving husband Franklyn, her parents Raymond and Marie, her sister Leila and brother Rolland, her in’laws Arnold and Marie Frey and brother-in-law Fred Frey. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Lonnie of West Des Moines, Laurinda (Tim) Fitzgerald of Cedar Rapids, Lynette (Gaylen) Wunschel of Ida Grove, Lyndell (Mary) of Chanhassen, MN, Latricia of Norwalk, and Leland (Kirsten) of Iowa City.

Grandchildren: Melissa (Ryan) Davisson (Aiden and Jack), Erin (Bob) Krogmeier (Owen), Andrea Ulrich (Alexis, Caitlyn, Calli, Aaron, Makayla, Axton, and Tate), Matthew Frey, Megan (Charlie) Enquist, Jessica (Levi) Doss (Lorelei and Madelyn), David (Allison) Frey (Elsie), Kate (Taylor) Crow, Sarah (Keanan) Elmore (Kaydence, Deklan, Rylee), Amelia Wunschel, Andrew Bartlett, Ben Frey, Nolan Frey, Mitchell Frey, and William Frey. Also a sister-in-law, Floanne Frey of Sioux City, S.D., brother-in-law, Howard Johnson of Ashton, several nieces and nephews, church friends, and special neighbors on Pleasant Lane.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Edencrest for going above and beyond in providing such great care for our mother. They came to appreciate her quick wit and humor as much as her gentle spirit.
