Marcella "Marcy" Catherine Nielsen-Harvieux

July 12, 1930 — July 24, 2020

Ruthven

Marcella Catherine Nielsen Harvieux, the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth (Betz) Lohberger, was born on July 12th 1930 in Sutherland, Iowa. Marcella was raised in Sutherland and attended school there.

Marcella was united in marriage to Luverne “Dutch” Nielsen in April of 1948, they were blessed with 8 children. After 35 years of marriage, they divorced.

Marcella worked as a nurse’s aide for many years at Millie’s Rest Home in Sutherland and for several years at SVMH in Cherokee doing clerical work.

Disliking the Iowa winters and encouraged by family to move where winters were non-existent and jobs were plentiful, she sold her home and moved to Las Vegas in 1986 where she lived for over 25 years.

She worked several jobs in Vegas. There she met a Catholic, Minnesota snowbird, Merrill Harvieux.  They married in 1989 and soon after Marcy gained the love and respect of Merrill’s 9 adult children.  Merrill passed away in 2007.

Being a devout Catholic, Marcy devoted much of her time with her Vegas church family.  She crafted many, many rosaries which were donated to other countries.  She had a very kind heart donating   services to help the homeless in Las Vegas.

At her Vegas church, she befriended Harry Kasprzyk, her faithful, spiritual companion.  Together they were a powerful, prayerful team! He remained her spiritual friend to the end.

Marcella moved back to Iowa in 2011 with declining health.  She lived in Emmetsburg, Willoway Complex in Sutherland and lastly at the Ruthven Care Center where she was called to her “heavenly home” on July 24, 2020.  She had just turned 90.

Marcella was musically talented having shared her beautiful singing voice with the Sacred Heart Parish Choir. She enjoyed knitting, making afghans, scarves and dishcloths for all her children.  Her greatest joys were times spent with family AND Christmas! She loved trying out new recipes and was well known for her custard pies and popcorn balls!

Preceding her in death are her parents, her son Dale, son-in-law James (Ted) Florine, her siblings, husbands, 2 grandsons Vance and Luke and great grandson Hunnar.

Left to cherish her memories are her  children—Suzanne Lichner of Henderson, NV, Donna du’Monceaux of Eden Prairie, MN, Sherry (Terry) Cooper of Bucklin, MO,  Deryl (Gail) Nielsen of Kingman, AZ, Sandy (Randy) Pritts of Spirit Lake, IA, Dan (Eva) Nielsen of Ruthven, IA and Chris (Judy) Nielsen of Kingman, AZ, 19 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the caregivers at the Ruthven Care Center and St. Croix Hospice based in Spencer for the quality and loving care she received.  She loved you all!
