LaVonne Marion Schuknecht, the daughter of Arthur and Ann Plagman was born on July 5, 1927, at home on the farm by Peterson, Iowa. Her schooling years were spent in Peterson and graduated from Peterson High School in 1945.
LaVonne married Delbert Charles Schuknecht on November 10, 1945, at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa. From this marriage three children were born: Cynthia, Linda, and Steven. They farmed near Paullina for about one year, then by Peterson for 14 years before moving to their farm by Rossie in 1960.
LaVonne was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa. January 2010, she won the Women In Denim Inspiration Award. Agriculture was always the center of her life and included cows, chickens, pigs, and sheep. Many years LaVonne worked in the fields growing corn and bean crops. She loved plowing in the spring and hauling the harvest to town with her tractor. She also hauled silage for the Christensen family. LaVonne’s nickname was ‘The Chicken Lady.’ She worked at Anderson Pullets many years loading, debeaking and vaccinating chickens. Her hobbies included knitting afghans, sewing clothes, big summer gardens, embroidering tea towels for family and friends, and fishing trips. LaVonne loved her dog, Buddy.
LaVonne passed away on Friday, September 23, 2022, on her farm at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delbert; brothers, Vern and Charles and their wives, Phyllis and Mary Alice Plagman; daughter-in-law, Mary Schuknecht; son-in-law, Donald Whitman; and great-grandsons, Noah Kiley and Jake Schermerhorn.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Cynthia Behrends and husband, Ronald of Spencer, IA, Linda Brooks of Fairmont, MN, and Steven Schuknecht and wife, Maureen of Albert City, IA; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-granddaughters as well as other relatives and friends.
