Spencer

Larry LeRoy Larson, the son of LeRoy Myles and Barbara Josephine (Fank) Larson, was born August 14, 1942, in Estherville, Iowa. He received his early education in Dolliver, and his graduating class was the last one to graduate from there. He loved sports and was a good basketball player. After graduation, he attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville for two years.

He entered into the military on January 29, 1963 serving in the Air Force. He was stationed at Larson AFB in Washington. This is where he met Sharon and they were married on September 26, 1964, in Astoria, Oregon. He was then stationed in Guam, and during this time Sharon lived with Larry’s parents in Dolliver. He was honorably discharged on November 4, 1966.

After serving in the military, Larry moved to Estherville and worked for the Railroad and then the John Morrell Pork Plant. In 1973, they moved back to Oregon to care for Sharon’s mother. Larry worked for the Oregon DOT. They moved to Ames in 1976, and Larry worked for the Iowa DOT in the highway maintenance department. He was transferred to Spencer in 1977, where he worked until his retirement.

Larry enjoyed golfing and riding his motorcycle. He even custom fitted his golf cart and motorcycle with a cigarette lighter so he could plug in his portable oxygen tank.  He belonged to the Spencer Bunch Motorcycle Club. Larry loved his grandchildren and spending time with them.

He passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019, at his home at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Sharon in 2016.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons: Rob Larson and wife, Darla of Spencer, IA, and Mike Larson of Spencer, IA; his grandchildren: Travis (Amber) Larson, Todd (Katie) Larson, Tyler (Lindsey) Larson, T.J. Johnson and Megan O’Brien; his great-grandchildren: Tyson Larson, Taylor Larson, Aubrey Larson, Rilee Larson, Tanner Larson, Henlee Larson and Poppi Larson; one sister, Barbara Workman-Schneider (Dennis) of Emmetsburg, IA; other relatives and many friends.
