Klaas Dick Groen, the son of Benhard and Jennie (Nagel) Groen was born on February 26, 1936, near Rock Rapids, IA. He received his early education attending country school in Lyon County. After school, he worked for many area farmers.

Klaas married Betty Klein on March 21, 1958, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Shortly after they moved to Spencer, where he started their own company in 1965 and built many homes in the Spencer and Iowa Lakes Area. He employed many young men over the years and enjoyed teaching them the construction trade. He enjoyed playing ball, whether he was pitching or coaching little league. As he slowed down in life, traveling became their pastime and they spent 20 years in Arizona, where golfing became his hobby. In recent years he lived at the Highlands, he enjoyed playing pool with his friends. He was a member of Hope Reformed Church. His church and faith were always important to him. He served on Consistory, building committees, taught Sunday school and volunteered on mission work projects. His mission work took him to Haiti, Nicaragua and other areas of the United States. His family was very important to him and loved attending sports and school activities for their children and grandchildren.

Klaas passed away on September 16, 2019, at the St. Luke Lutheran Nursing Home in Spencer after a 6 week stay. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Burdell Groen: one sister, Gertie Gransow and two brothers-in-law, Donald Rust and Harold Gransow.
