John Valory Henely

August 13, 1954 — November 13, 2015

John Valory Henely, the son of Lee and Gladys (Cox) Henely, was born on August 13, 1954 in Emmetsburg, IA. He was raised on a farm near Ayrshire where he attended school, graduating in 1973. After high school he entered into the military, serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. Following his time in the service he returned to the Ayrshire area and worked for area farmers. In 1978, he moved to Spencer and starting working at the Spencer Hospital as an EMT and in the maintenance department. He retired in 2010 and began working fulltime for the King Farms. John married Cheri Jenkins on April 24, 1981, in Spencer, IA. John enjoyed farming, going to casinos and taking the annual family trip to Valley Fair Amusement Park. He loves spending time with his family and spoiling them all at Christmas. He liked to play jokes on people and was the official 'prankster' of the family. John was a caring person and took care of many family members when they were terminally ill. John said to his daughter Stacie, 'I've had a good life and have no regrets. I had the privilege of marrying your mom and raising four wonderful children. I had the honor of serving in the Marines for 4 years and then working for Spencer Hospital for 32 years. In my spare time I farmed to help unwind.' John passed away on Friday, November 13, 2015, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 61. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Kenneth, Don and Dale Henely and three sisters: Diane Wickman, Marilyn Schultz and Jean Egelund. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cheri of Spencer, IA; two daughters: Nicole Henely of Des Moines, IA and Stacie Nelson of Buffalo, MN; two sons: Bryan Johnson (Nicole) of Fairfax, IA and Shawn Johnson (Erin) of Sauk Rapids, MN; ten grandchildren: Taylor, Perry, Paige, Noah, Claire, Katelyn, Brock, Weston, Griffin and Evan; five sisters: DeVona Trimble of Ruthven, IA, Carol (Leo) Wigen of Spencer, IA, Linda (Rick) Larson of Branson, MO, Virginia (Harry) Origer of Mallard, IA and Debbie Theesfeld of Ayrshire, IA; six brothers: Ray (Judy) Henely of Grinnell, IA, Paul Henely of Waco TX, Bernard (Sharon) Henely of Estero, FL, Joe Henely of Rodman, IA, Dave (Kathy) Henely of Chariton, IA and Perry (Jane) of Lake City, IA; sister-in-law, Janet Henely of Sioux Rapids, IA; brother-in-law, Gail Egeland of Wallingford, IA; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. I went to you for all the things I didn't know. Now when I need the answers, I don't know where to go. Your fight was quick but oh so loud. A battle to make every Marine proud. Any other man would have crumbled long ago. But your strength and determination was never just for show. I've never in my life met a more selfless soul. You've helped so many people become so whole. There's so many stories and the times we never had. I am so incredibly proud, To call you my Dad. You will be missed, Will be a hole in my heart. Its gonna be tough To find that new start. You were the glue You looked out for us all. Without you here I'm afraid I might fall. Written by Shawn Johnson (son)
