John Michael Unrau

John Michael Unrau, the son of John Mervel and Sue Elizabeth Russell Unrau, was born July 27, 1939 in Des Moines, IA.  John received his education and graduated from Spencer High School in 1958.  He continued his education at Buena Vista College, University of Iowa and Mankato State with a Masters Degree in 1972.  John served during the Vietnam War with the United States Navy from 1965 to 1968.

      John married Marlys Gay Thompson on February 3, 1987 in Spirit Lake, Iowa.  John worked at the Arnolds Park Amusement Park for 17 years.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting along with some adventures in golf.  John was an avid fan of John Wayne and all of his movies.  He also enjoyed relaxing with television and a cold beer.  He and Marlys took trips to Black Hills, Montana and Wyoming.  Most of all, John loved spending time with his family.

     On February 1, 2020, John passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer at the age of 80.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

     John is survived by his wife, Marlys of Spencer, IA; one son and his wife, Franklin  and Brooke Unrau of Galena, IL; 2 granddaughters: Frankie and Charlotte Unrau; 4 step-children: Theresa Thompson of Minneapolis, MN, Dan Schlarbaum of Spencer, IA, Cheri (Charles) Daws and Joe Schlarbaum of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers and their wives: Jerry (Patricia) Unrau of Houston, TX and James (Mary Lou) Unrau of Dallas, TX; other relatives and friends.

Graveside Services are pending to be held in the Spring.
