Jerry Lou Maiden Howe

March 22, 1929 — May 10, 2023

Marathon, Iowa

Jerry Lou (Hoover) Maiden Howe passed away peacefully at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on May 10th, 2023.

Jerry was born March 22, 1929, to Raymond and Dorothy (Belknap) Hoover on a farm near Ayrshire, Iowa. The family resided in this area until they moved to a farm west of Marathon Iowa in 1942. Jerry attended elementary school at Hilltop Country School and Lincoln Lee. She graduated in 1946 from Marathon High School. After graduating, she worked as a telephone operator at the Storm Lake phone office. Jerry was united in marriage with Calvin (Tink) Carl Maiden on November 16, 1948, in Jackson Minnesota. To this marriage 3 children were born: Janice Joy Clausen of Milford IA, Galen Hugh Maiden of Laurens IA, and Rhonda Sue Nussbaum of Colton SD.

They resided in Marathon where Tink worked for Co-op driving the tank wagon until they began farming on a farm south of Marathon. They worked side-by-side doing field work and livestock chores. Jerry was meticulous about her home, yard and garden. She was a loving mother and was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the Marathon community. In 1971, they moved to the farm west of Marathon that was farmed previously by her parents. Jerry loved farm life, and anything related to agriculture, and had a passion for animals. Jerry loved her pets, the family’s horses, and provided wonderful care for the family’s livestock. They farmed there until Tink passed away suddenly at age 53.

The two owned a lake cabin during their marriage. They had a passion for entertaining family and friends at the lake and always kept the shed refrigerator full of an assortment of beverages for anyone that stopped by. Jerry always welcomed visitors with appetizers and meals and did it often on the fly. They enjoyed boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming. The two also enjoyed snowmobiling with friends during the winter. They also had a passion for dancing and music.

After Tink’s death, Jerry and her youngest daughter Rhonda, moved to Spencer until Jerry was united in marriage with Nyle Howe, December 13, 1983. At that time, she returned to Marathon until 2008. Due to some medical issues, and the passing of Nyle, she then made the move to South Dakota to be closer to her youngest daughter.

Jerry cherished her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tink, her second husband Nyle, and her brother Gordon. She will be greatly missed by her children, her 3 grandchildren Adam Clausen (Allison), Riley Baade (Blake), and Kade Nussbaum (Melanie), and her 8 her great grandchildren Brady, Katelyn, Charlie, Whitley, Hudson, Tenley, Hartlynn, and Lainey, along with her sister Shirley (Hoover) Forry of Vancouver WA, brother Cliff Hoover (Bonnie) of Spencer, Sister-in Law Beverly Hoover, and with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
