Hartley

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Janet Fay Norton Roos, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, who peacefully departed this world at the Community Memorial Health Care Center in Hartley at the age of 93. Janet was born on October 17, 1932, in Spencer, Iowa, to Harry and Edna (Peters) Ketelsen, and spent her life as a devoted Hartley resident, where she touched the lives of many.

Janet united in marriage to Earl S. Norton on September 9, 1951 in Hartley, IA and they became the parents of three children. Janet excelled in her education, proudly graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1951. Her commitment to lifelong learning and service was evident through her active involvement in the Trinity United Church of Christ, where she served as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, and dedicated volunteer. Her love for education extended beyond the church, as she volunteered her time in the elementary school, inspiring countless young minds.

In addition to her passion for teaching, Janet exhibited a strong dedication to her family's businesses, playing an integral role in both her father’s and her husband’s endeavors. Janet was a vibrant member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Dorcas Society, and also took pride in her work with Meals on Wheels, demonstrating her compassionate spirit and commitment to those in need. Following Earl’s passing, Janet married Glenn “Whitey” Roos on April 24, 1999 in Hartley. Following their marriage, they lived in Hartley and wintered for a few years in Arizona.

Beyond her community involvement, Janet cherished her personal passions. An avid reader and lover of the outdoors, she found joy in fishing, golfing, and spending time at the lake. Her artistic talents shone through in her quilting and crocheting, gifts she lovingly shared with family and friends. Janet was also a wonderful grandmother, supporting her grandchildren's activities and nurturing their dreams.

Janet is survived by her devoted children, James (Jan) Norton of Arnolds Park, Ia, Linda Norton and Glenda Norton both of Hartley, IA; five grandchildren, Josh Ahrenstorff, Paul (Amanda) Ahrenstorff Mathew (Tracey) Ahrenstorff, Brock (Jen) Norton, and Brooke (Alex) Maass. 12 great grandchildren. Step Children, Jane (Tim) Miller, Jeff (Sharon) Roos, Judy Coleman, and Joel (LuAnn) Roos. 11 step grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

In this time of mourning, let us remember the light that Janet brought into our lives and the love she showed to others. May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl Norton on Jan 16, 1997; Glenn “Whitey” Roos on March 29, 2015.
