James Edward Johannsen, the son of Otto Leo and Monica (Panther) Johannsen, was born December 25, 1929, in Primghar, Iowa.  His childhood years were spent in Calumet, Iowa, where he received his education.  Jim entered the military in 1952 and served with the U.S. Marine Corp until his honorable discharge in 1954.

Jim married Harriet Hill on July 18, 1948, in Blair, Nebraska.  After their marriage, they lived in the communities of Sutherland, Storm Lake and Spencer, Iowa, where he lived for almost 40 years.  He worked at Vander Haag’s Auto Salvage as a mechanical and counter salesman until his retirement.  He was an active member of the Church of Christ in Sutherland, and later the First Christian Church in Spencer, where he was on the fellowship committee.  He was a member of the Legion Club in Sutherland and a Hospice volunteer in Spencer.  Throughout the years, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hiking and was blessed with spending 13 years with his wife in Arizona.

He passed away at his son, Jim’s home in Colorado while visiting for Thanksgiving on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at the age of 91.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet in 2017; daughter, Valerie Stefaniak, and one sister, Helen Slobaszewski.
