Eugene Homer Sandvig

September 7, 1930 — February 20, 2022

Spencer

Eugene Homer Sandvig, the son of George and Rose (Johnson) Sandvig, was born on September 7, 1930 in Rolfe, Iowa. He attended country school in Rolfe and then the family moved into Laurens, Iowa where he finished his schooling.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Rolfe. Gene entered the military on January 24, 1952, serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on May 26, 1955.

He married Beverly Petersen on October 1, 1955, in Jackson, MN. They made their home in Marathon, Iowa where they raised their family. He worked for the City of Marathon in the maintenance department and worked part-time as a night watchman for the city. He then became self-employed as an electrician for several years before owning and operating Gene & Sons DX Station. Farmers Coop Association purchased the station and Gene worked there until his retirement.

In his retirement he worked at the Clay County Fairgrounds. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing boating, camping, going to car races and watching the Chicago Bulls and Dallas Cowboys.  He was always a big help in the kitchen with baking and cooking. He just liked to stay busy. He was especially proud of the fact that he and Beverly constructed their home in Marathon in 1984. But most of all he loved attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Eugene passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, IA, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his, parents; his wife Beverly in 2021; his great-grandson Luke Aronson; his siblings: Evelyn Sandvig, Charlene Sanden, Rosemary Dershem, Raymond Sandvig, Robert Sandvig, Dorothy Pellant and Kenneth Sandvig.
