Emma Helen Smith Hansen Houchen, “Helen” to most, died at home on June 10, 2026 with her loving daughter, Sandy, at her side.
Helen was born on October 25, 1934 in a farmhouse 6 miles north of Emmetsburg. She attended country school and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1952. Two weeks later she married Burdette (Bud) Hansen and together they had one child, Sandy. As Bud built his masonry business, Helen provided office support for the business and kept the household running smoothly. She attended cosmetology school in Spencer, got her license and then taught the students at the cosmetology school.
Helen and Bud were married for over 40 years. They were just beginning to travel in their motorhome when Bud passed away. Helen then married Don Houchen. They spent over 20 years together travelling the US with their friends in the Beaver Motorcoach Association. They also enjoyed travelling abroad, visiting places like Russia, multiple European nations, as well as the Holy Land, which was a favorite. After spending a few years in Mesa, AZ, they came back to the midwest and made their home in the Kansas City area, whey they stayed until Don’s passing.
Helen moved back home to Iowa and settled in at Terrace Glen Village in Marion with her beloved cat, Shadow. They were the best companions for each other. Their days were spent playing bingo, card games with neighbors and enjoying visits from family. Helen is survived by her daughter Sandy (Chris), Stepsons Gil (Melody) and Jeff. As well as 5 grandchildren: Hollie (Brian), Abbie (Melinda), Bennett (Jamie), Ian and Austin (Maria), 8 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild.
