Dorothy Jean Spiess

     Dorothy Jean Spiess was born on October 6, 1934, to Earl and Norma Kraft. She lived her early life in Clay  County Iowa and received her education in the Greenville and Greenville-Rossie School Districts, graduating in 1952. She married Virgil Spiess in December, 1953. Five children were born to this union. They lived in various locations in their lifetime and retired in 1999 to Spencer, IA. She went to AIB Business School and worked as a personal secretary. 
     The most important thing to her was being a “stay at home” Mom with her five children: Randy, Steve, Peggy, Julie, and Kimberly. Also, during those years, she had a daycare in her home.
     After her children were all in school, Dorothy worked as a typesetter at Black Hawk Publishing Company in Cedar Falls, IA and Grinnell Herald-Register in Grinnell, IA. They moved in 1986 to Macomb, IL. In Macomb, she was a secretary at Bethphage Mission Midwest where she was honored by her colleagues as Secretary of the Year.
     Dorothy passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Garden Terrace Alzheimer’s Center in Aurora, CO. She is preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her daughter, Julie; her parents; her brothers, Richard Kraft and Bob Kraft; her sisters, Donna Armstrong and Carol Meyer.
     Dorothy is survived by her son Randy (Denise) Spiess and their children, Russell Spiess, Robyn Dietz, Bridget Peterson, Madeline Wilkes, Heidi Matson, and Maureen Kapler; Son Steve (Andrea) Spiess and their children Emily Spiess and Lilly Spiess; daughter Peggy (Ken) Schmidt and their son Eric Schmidt; daughter Julie’s children, Gary Dempster, Cory Hammer and Nicole Hammer; daughter Kimberly (Eric) and their son Alex Huskey. She is also survived by her sister Doris Bryant Sisters-in-law, Wanda (Wayne) Hollenbeck and Virginia Haddad.  Brother-in-law Larry (Darlene) Spiess as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, March 31, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
