Donald Howard Christy

April 2, 1931 — June 5, 2020

Spencer

Donald Howard Christy, the son of Howard and Helen (Kay) Christy, was born April 2, 1931 in Storm Lake, Iowa.  Don grew up with his grandparents, Ferdinand and Nora Kay, and their son, Harold on their farm north of Truesdale, Iowa, where he attended school and graduated.

Donald married Donna Doreen Oatman on May 30, 1952 in El Paso, TX.  Don was serving in the military with the U.S. Army during this time, entering into the military on February 5, 1952.  The couple then relocated to Washington State, where Don was stationed.  Don was discharged in 1954 and then they moved to the Sac City Area where they started farming. After a year they moved north of Marathon where they farmed 41 years. He worked at local factories during the winter months and was active with the Dept. of Agriculture 25 years. In 1975, they moved to another residence north of Marathon where they farmed until their retirement in 1996.  They moved to Milford in 2006. He attended their sons sports and music activities, plus Don was active on the Marathon school board. He was a member of the American Legion at Marathon and Spencer. He was always active with the Missouri Lutheran Church wherever they were residing. He faithfully supported mission work and faith based organizations for spreading the Gospel throughout the world. Boating was a favorite activity as Don drove the boat while family members water skied and had fun at Okoboji and Storm Lake. Don and Donna worked a number of years as caretakers for Acorn Ridge while at their summer home. Don and Donna did a lot of bicycling, jogging, running and hiking. Don ran in a number of 5Ks at the Marathon to Marathon and multiple communities celebrating their centennials. He was 76 when he ran his last 5K. In retirement, he has collected a number of tractors and was proud to enter a summer tractor ride or parade at an area community. He enjoyed attending car shows around the country plus the Albert City Threshermans’s show.

He was always interested in and supportive of his grandchildren and really appreciated all the stories, pictures, videos and visits they could bring.  They spent their winters in Arizona and their summers in Lake Okoboji.  In 2010, they moved to Golfview Condominiums. Don spent the last couple years at Longhouse-Northshire Nursing home in Spencer.

Donald passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, June 5, 2020 at the age of 89.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna in 2015.

Left to cherish his memory are three sons: Timothy (Becky) Christy of Webb, Iowa, Rex (Jeanne) Christy of Vinton, IA and Philip (Siri) Christy of Spencer, IA; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; stepbrother, Merle Christy (Ruth) of Silver Dollar City, Branson, MO; other relatives and friends who rejoice in knowing that their dad and grandfather is at home in Heaven.
