Dennis Dean Johanson

Dennis "Denny" Dean Johanson, 72, was born to Gus and Marjorie Johanson on December 5th, 1950, in Spencer. His childhood years were spent in Royal where he received his education at Clay Central and graduated in 1969 and then enlisted in the Navy. He served until 1973 where some of his time was served onboard the USS Hancock. After serving in the Navy he attended DMACC in Ankeny where he studied Commercial Art then went onto work various jobs in the maintenance field in the Spencer and Emmetsburg areas.

Denny married Shirley Boyer on July 27th, 1991, in Royal, Iowa. Following their marriage, they resided in Emmetsburg and remained there until they moved to Spencer in 2000. They are devoted members of the Grace United Methodist Church. They enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and family and loved attending the Clay County Fair. He was a talented artist and loved to draw. Old buildings were a main focus, and he was very detailed oriented in his work. He also enjoyed woodworking, loved to socialize and was active in the community theater where he was in several productions.

Denny passed away on April 8th, 2023, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital surrounded by his loving wife, family and close friends. He was 72 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Johanson of Spencer, her son Corey Boyer and his wife Stacy and their children, Dakota and Emily of Carroll. His three children from a previous marriage; Daughter Valerie Douglas and her husband Joe of Orange City, FL; Son Shaun Johanson and his wife Demetra of Wells, TX; Daughter Heather Johanson of Orange City, IA; Sister Joyce Meyerink and her husband Merle of Platte, SD; Sister Judy Eckard of Spirit Lake; Sister Jackie Fuller and her husband Ron of Sioux Falls, SD; Sister Barbara Smith and her husband Denis of Martinez, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Larry Eckard; his in-laws, Gerald and Ruby Boyer
