He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II on the submarine, U.S.S. Gabilan. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. Upon return to civilian life, he attended Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Fishing in Canada was an annual event with his two sons and friends for over 25 years. He had great pleasure in landscaping and growing special roses. Road trips to all 50 states were enjoyed by the whole family. Playing golf was a favorite pastime for many years. On October 4, 1952, Dean married Gladylou "Lu" Rose Mills in the First Baptist Church in Hastings, MN. They made their first home in New Hampton, Iowa, then in succession Algona, Ames, LeMars, finally moving to Spencer in June 1967.
