Billy F. Hughes born in September 1937 died Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Bill was born on a farm in Sutherland NE to Almer and Acenath Hughes. He graduated from Sutherland High School and left for Longview Texas to attend LaTourneau College. Graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Joined the USAF in 1960 as a navigator. Beginning his career flying B57 doing nuclear testing WB47 with Air Weather Reconnaissance, B57 and C47 in Viet Nam, B52 with Strategic Air Command, EC 135 ACCS Airborne Command and Control squadron. Retiring from the Air Force in Rapid City in 1962. He then started is own business mowing soccer fields for the city and was recognizable by the yellow lab accompanying him.
While a youth he attended Bible Camp and excepted Christ as his savior. He was a real soldier for the Lord. Sharing his testimony with people, teaching adult bible studies, being an Elder and Deacon in his church. He also belonged to Christian Business Men in Rapid City, SD. His grandma Hughes was a good influence and he remembers her favorite Bible verse Lamentations 3:23 Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
Bill married Evelyn Hallett in 1962. They had two daughters, Carrie and Robin. He loved his family and spent many weekends taking them all camping and fishing for Walleye. Bill enjoyed Skiing with Carrie and soccer with Robin. He loved children and before his girls were born, the neighbor kids would knock on the door and ask if Bill could come play. When the four grandchildren arrived, he was more than ready to play with Jazmine, Aliza, Azra and Boaz.
Left to mourn his life are his wife; daughters: Carrie and son-in- law, Bryon Gaul and Robin and son-in-law, Brian Edwards and grandchildren: Jazmine, Aliza, Azra, Boaz Edwards.
He will be rejoicing in heaven with his brother, Dave Hughes; sisters: Ramona Powell, Betty Priel, and Joyce Boyer; many friends and family.
He will be remembered for his love for Jesus, family, good sense of humor, fishing, Husker football and apple pie.
