Betty June Schmidt, the daughter of Otto and Pearl (Wells) Klatt was born on June 25, 1927 in Osceola County, Iowa. She attended country schools in the area. Following her schooling, she was a nurse’s aide for the Spencer Hospital and then became a Home Health Aide for the next 30 years.
On January 2, 1950, Betty married Henry Brons. To this union six children were born: Avis, Nancy, Janice, Steven Douglas and Brenda. They later divorced. Later in life on April 16, 2005, Betty married Richard Schmidt.
Beyond her career as a nurse’s aide caring for others, Betty’s greatest joy was her family. She also loved staying busy with many activities like softball, dancing, crocheting, sharing her love of jewelry with her friends at Riverview Terrace, collecting Betty Boop dolls, and spreading kindness to everyone she met. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, volunteered for more than 30 years at the Clay County Fair and enjoyed taking trips to see her kids.
Betty passed away at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls peacefully on December 6, 2025, at the age of 98, surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, “Dick” Schmidt; her daughter, Nancy Owens; her son, Steven Brons; her grandchild, Michael Williams; her sisters: Ann Klatt, Merna Jacobs and Lola Yock and her brothers: Otto, James. John, William, Thomas and Larry Klatt.
Betty is survived by her children: Avis Rinsem (James), Brenda Martin (Darrell), Janice Williams and Doug Brons (Dorothy); her stepchildren: Mary Kay Schmidt and Brent (Ann) Schmidt; many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at McKennan Hospital for their compassion and care during her final days.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her laughter and sense of humor, her generosity and boundless love, and her fiery red hair with the personality to match.
