Bernadine Ione Mead
December 18, 1928 - October 6, 2013
Bernadine Ione Mead, the daughter of Gilbert and Edyth (Kirsch) Wilbur, was born on December 18, 1928, near Gillett Grove, IA. She was raised in the area and attended schools in Linn Grove and Sioux Rapids and then graduating from high school in Laurens.

On June 11, 1946, Bernadine married George Benna at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. To this union four children were born: Linda, Carrol, Bruce and Gary. Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of Alta, Marathon and Webb, where they farmed. George passed away on January 1, 1960. Bernie moved into Webb, where she worked at the nursing home in Sioux Rapids and was also a cook at the school in Webb. She attended the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was also a Cub Scout Leader.

Bernadine married Kendall Mead on March 11, 1962 in Webb, IA. The couple moved to Spencer. She worked for Spurgeon’s, The Ready Mix and Northlawn Cemetery. She enjoyed taking care of her flower garden, sewing and making crafts, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was a longtime member of Grace Methodist Church.

Bernie passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, George; her daughter Carrol in infancy; daughter-in-law, Diane Benna; one brother, Leo and one sister, Eve Knudtson.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 51 years, Kendall of Spencer; one daughter, Linda Connor of Marathon, IA; two sons: Bruce (Deb) Benna of Jefferson, IA and Gary (Lori) Benna of Tucson, AZ; 3 grandchildren: Shannon Benna, Daniel Connor (Sara) and Gabe Powell; 2 great grandchildren: Reese and Grier Connor; 2 brothers: Norman Wilbur (Marilyn) of Clarinda, IA and Galen Wilbur (Donna) of Bolliver, MO; 3 sisters: Beverly Perrigo of Truesdale, IA, Karen Cross of Spencer, IA and Myrna Bouska (Edwin) of Laurens, IA; many other relatives and friends.

Linda and family.....I have so many fond memories of your Mom and will always hold them close to my heart. She was a vibrant part of our beloved community, growing up in Webb. I always admired her air of confidence and 'can-do- spirit. There was nothing she wouldn't think of tackling and that trait was passed to the next generation. Bless her, you, and your family at this time of Bernie's passing. Luv, Marilyn
