Phyllis Arlene Heikens
August 12, 1928 - May 1, 2012
Phyllis Arlene Heikens, daughter of Wesley Frank and Estella Ella (Davis) Kohn, was born on August 12, 1928, on a farm north of Spencer. She was the only pupil in her grade at Meadow Township country school. In high school she showed calves through 4H and dreamed of owning a house on a lake. After high school in Spencer, she attended college at Hamlin University in St Paul, MN.

Phyllis married Eugene Severson in 1947 and had Kohnne a year later. On August 7, 1954 Phyllis married Bernard Heikens in Jackson, MN. Their daughter Jane was born in 1956. The couple settled on the Heiken's family farm where Phyllis raised her family and found a creative outlet sewing draperies for Twetten's.

Phyllis was born with an appreciation for art. She loved theater and acted in over a dozen performances including 'On Golden Pond'. She was a knitting artist and a food artist (delicious salads, pies, and carmel corn were specialties). She shared her appreciation for art by volunteering at the Lakes Arts Center. A daily fan of NPR, Phyllis enjoyed music, dancing, well written words, and beautiful spaces. In 1999, Phyllis combined all her talents by building a beautiful permanent home on Lake Okoboji. The space and the hostess created a sanctuary for all who visited.

Phyllis was encouraged in her faith by the congregation at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake.

Phyllis passed away on May 1, 2012, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard and her daughter Jane Zaiger.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kohnne Bippus and her husband, David of Cherry Valley, IL; granddaughter, Laura Wells and her husband, Tom of Saginaw, MI; two great granddaughters, Hadley and Kassy; two sisters, Beverly Beving of Spencer, IA and Mariel Oftelie and her husband, Phil of Bellevue, NE; along with many other relatives and friends.

Phyllis was a special friend of the family, in fact to me she was family to me as I had known her all my life. I can remember the times that my mom and Phyllis would take Jane, Kohnne and myself to the lake for picnics and shopping. It was always chaotic when Jane, her cousins and me would all spend the night together. Jane and I would often ride horses together and attended dancing lessons. Our moms had a special bond and would often takes us shopping. I will miss Phyllis and I will always cherish the wonderful memories I have of her.

Your very dear mother/grandmother has been my weekly lunch partner for several years now when we are here at the family farm. Those visits with Phyllis are a big part of what I cherished about our twice yearly visits to the family farm. I first met Phyllis at a koffeeklatch my mother-in-law held in 1968 to introduce me (her son's new bride) to her friends ... and a very special group of women they were. From that day when Phyllis discovered my love of black raspberries, she alway brought me a black raspberry pie or topping when we visited. We were so fortunate that your mother remained an active part in our lives even after Marge passed. We will cherish the memorable times, both in IA and AZ, that we got to spend with Phyllis. She is in good hands now, but we, too, share your loss.

Phyllis was always so vibrant and fun to be with too.
Her love of family, friends, and the arts was always true.
We're assured by God's promise that she is with Him peacefully looking down from above-
and that God will cradle her family and friends in His arms with comfort and love.
Wonderful memories of Phyllis and her kindnesses too
will always be with us through and through

I had known Phyllis all my life, or rather she had known me since Jane and I were both born on Dec. 14, 1956 at Spencer Municipal Hospital. My mother, Joanne Mallory, and Phyllis were long-time friends. I don't think I have ever met a woman whose kindness, grace and style made such an impression on me. Her contributions to her family, friends and the community were numerous and much appreciated. Although her passing saddens me, I take comfort that she is now with her dear daughter, Jane, who was taken way too soon. God bless you, Phyllis. You will be missed by so many. My sympathy to the family. May many happy memories comfort you.

Dear Kohnne, David, Laura and all. We were deeply saddened to hear of your mom's passing. Tho we didn't know here well she was always so cordial and friendly at the times we spent together. I'll always remember her singing along the Cash/Carter tunes we played at Book Club when we reviewed (my choice) 'Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone'! I know you will all miss her now that she is gone but she will live in your hearts always. Love and Prayers from us.

Phyllis held me as a newborn and always remembered me through my 63 years. What a blessing she was in my life, especially when her good friend, my mom, passed away. She always remembered my birthday and was interested in my family. Kohnne and I spent many summers together as kids. Those years are very special.
Love you Phyllis . Hugs to Kohnne, David, Laura and family.

Phyllis was a close and dear family friend, whom I initially met because of her close friendship with my grandmother, Margaret Swanson. She brought laughter and grace whenever she visited the Swanson family (in Arizona or Iowa). As I got older, Phyllis would share words of wisdom in letters she regularly sent. My last letter from Phyllis was dated April 18, in which she characterized herself as having a 'small part' in my family's lives. In actuality, Phyllis leaves a big hole. However, I can take comfort in knowing she (and Grandma Marge) would likely be smiling as I officially graduate with my Master's degree this month.
